02 Dec Top Five Smartphones of 2018
Each of the previous few years has been an impressive one for the smartphone industry. While total sales may not be at the highs of five years ago, the innovation is still very impressive. With manufacturers such as Huawei, Samsung and Apple bringing their A game this year, there are so many great smartphones to check out. Here is a list of the top five smartphones of 2018, according to the team here at Future-Watch.
1. Samsung Galaxy Note 9
With the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung has given its fans everything they ever wanted. In many ways, it is the ultimate Android smartphone. With a huge 6.4 inch OLED screen, it is a gorgeous device for playing games, watching videos or using Gear VR to check out virtual reality content.
One thing that Samsung got right with the Note 9 was the battery. It is a massive 4000 mAh and that means getting a full day on a single charge is no problem. Even if someone is using the phone with 6 or 7 hours of screen on time, they should have enough battery by the end of the day.
Samsung has also taken great strides when it comes to the software that it has released. The latest Samsung Experience software is a lot better than old versions of its interface. That means some even find it better than stock Android, which is what is present on a Pixel device.
2. Apple iPhone Xs Max
It is impossible to talk about the best smartphone of the year without mentioning the iPhone. The company did not make a huge change between its X from the past year, with the Xs and the Xs Max. The reason why the Xs Max gets on the list is that it is the best version of the iPhone, but with a much bigger screen than the X or the Xs.
With the Xs Max from Apple, users get access to a massive 6.5-inch touchscreen. The cameras are as good as ever, probably one of the best in the smartphone space. And the interface is as smooth as ever. Apple has done a great job with iOS 12, which is a lot better than its previous version.
The only negative against the Xs Max is the fact that it still has a massive notch. Apple has not made any progress in making the notch smaller from last year. We may have to wait until 2019 or 2020 for that to happen.
3. Huawei Mate 20 Pro
Huawei has been outdoing itself in the past few years. While the company still cannot directly sell its phones in the United States, it has made many inroads in Asia, Europe and other parts of the world, and the Mate 20 Pro is the pinnacle of its work.
The phone has a beautiful 6.39-inch display, which is OLED. It is running on the company’s own Kirin 980 processor, which is as good as the latest Snapdragon that powers high end Android devices.
It is the cameras where the Mate 20 Pro shines. It has THREE rear cameras that come in at 40MP + 20MP + 8MP. These cameras combine to give the best camera functionality on any smartphone in the world, even better than what someone can get with the Google Pixel!
4. OnePlus 6
When OnePlus releases a smartphone, there are certain fans who will always be excited. Why? Because they offer value that others do not. The OnePlus phones are typically 30 or 40 percent cheaper compared to what Apple and Samsung offers.
And that is big news, because the OnePlus 6 has the same processor as the Note 9. It also has a large, OLED screen that is every bit as good as what is there on the Note 9 or the latest iPhone.
The only area where OnePlus falls short is the camera. People who take a lot of pictures at night will want to steer clear of this phone. But if they are only taking pictures in the day, then they will get a lot of value from this smartphone!
5. Google Pixel 3
The final phone on our list is the Google Pixel 3. It is the smaller of the two Pixels released this year. It gets in ahead of the 3 XL because it does not have an ugly notch, unlike the other phone!
Where the Pixel 3 shines is the camera setup. Google has used many software tricks to ensure that its phones have the best night time photographs of any smartphone. Someone can take a photo outside at night and it will look as though they were in a well-lit area.
